North Texas Central College, located in Gainesville, suffered an unimaginable loss on Friday night when a bus carrying 15 of its women’s softball players crashed, leaving four dead. The women, who ranged in age from 18 to 20, were all from North Texas towns. Nine team members were treated at area hospitals, and two team members were flown to OU Medical Center in Norman, which is a trauma center.

The accident occurred near Davis, Oklahoma on Interstate 35. An 18-wheel truck, traveling north, apparently veered across traffic hitting the bus., which was traveling south According to news reports, the driver of the truck drove approximately 950 feet, across the median before hitting the bus and ultimately crashing in trees. The National Transportation Board representative stated that it was obvious that no evasive maneuvers were taken.

The 53 year old driver of the truck was treated and released and did provide the Oklahoma Highway Patrol with a statement. And, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol captain reported that the driver had stated that something in the truck had distracted him. Obviously the investigation is on-going into what caused this unthinkable tragedy.
